Written by: Abhimanyu Yadav, Data Governance Analyst at Incept Data Solutions, Inc.

In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has made groundbreaking strides, revolutionizing various industries and transforming the way we interact with technology. When you think about AI these days, especially generative AI, you think of ChatGPT. However, Among the impressive lineup of AI innovations, one name stands out as a symbol of remarkable progress - Bard AI by Google. In this blog post, we will delve into the captivating world of Bard AI, exploring its capabilities, significance, and potential impact on the future of AI and human-machine interaction.

Let’s talk about what Bard AI is. Bard AI is an advanced natural language processing (NLP) model developed by Google. It was launched and available for public use in March of 2023. It is built on the foundation of deep learning neural networks, particularly leveraging cutting-edge techniques like transformers, which have redefined the landscape of language processing. This powerful language model empowers machines to comprehend and generate human-like text with remarkable accuracy and fluency.

Evolution of Bard AI -

Bard AI is the result of Google's tireless efforts to push the boundaries of AI research. It builds upon the success of previous language models like GPT-3, but with enhanced capabilities and more extensive training data. Google's team of AI researchers and engineers have worked relentlessly to fine-tune the model, making it more efficient, versatile, and capable of handling complex language tasks.

Applications of Bard AI -

The potential applications of Bard AI span a vast range of industries and domains. In the field of natural language processing, it can be employed for sentiment analysis, language translation, content generation, and even question-answering systems. Moreover, Bard AI holds enormous promise in conversational AI, facilitating more human-like interactions with virtual assistants and chatbots.

Conversational AI Revolution -

With Bard AI, the dream of developing highly engaging and interactive virtual assistants is now closer to reality. Its natural language understanding capabilities enable machines to comprehend context and nuances in human communication, thereby delivering more personalized and contextually relevant responses. This advancement has significant implications for customer service, healthcare, education, and numerous other sectors.

Enhancing Creativity -

One of the most captivating aspects of Bard AI is its ability to spark creativity. Content creators, writers, and artists can leverage this technology to brainstorm ideas, generate compelling narratives, and even assist in creative writing processes. The model's natural language generation prowess offers a new dimension of collaboration between humans and machines in the creative realm.

Ethical Considerations -

As AI continues to evolve, ethical considerations become paramount. Bard AI, with its advanced capabilities, raises concerns about misinformation and deepfakes. The potential misuse of such technology for generating fake news or misleading content underscores the importance of responsible AI development, robust safeguards, and verification mechanisms.

Democratizing AI -

Google's efforts in developing Bard AI are not limited to internal use. The company aims to democratize AI by making this technology accessible to developers, researchers, and businesses worldwide. By providing API access and developer tools, Google empowers a broader community to innovate and build applications that leverage the power of Bard AI for the betterment of society.

Key differences from ChatGPT. While Bard AI and ChatGPT are both large language models that are trained on massive datasets of text and code, and can write content and hold conversations, but they do contain some key differences that make each of them unique.

There are of course some differences on the technical front, i.e., Bard AI uses LaMDA model and ChatGPT uses the GPT-3.5 model. However, it is more relevant to see how this technical difference plays out in practice. The same can very well be understood and seen by how the two AI’s respond to the same question.

Below is an illustration of the same question being asked to the two generative AI. The question was “Explain generative AI in 50 words or less” and the answers by the two AI models are directly quoted below-

Bard AI:

“Sure, here is generative AI in 50 words or less:

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can create new content, such as text, images, or music. It does this by learning from existing data and then using that data to generate new, original content.

Here are some examples of generative AI:

  • DALL-E 2 can generate realistic images from text descriptions.

  • GPT-3 can generate text that is indistinguishable from human-written text.

  • MuSig can generate music that is as good as or better than human-composed music.

Generative AI is still in its early stages, but it has the potential to revolutionize the way we create and consume content.”

ChatGPT (Open AI):

“Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can create new data, such as images, music, or text, by learning patterns from existing examples. It uses algorithms like GANs (Generative Adversarial Networks) to generate content that closely resembles real data, showcasing its ability to produce novel and creative outputs.”

As you can see, both have similar but still different approaches to answering the question. Firstly, Bard, despite having specified in the question, does not adhere to the 50 words limit and gave an answer that crossed that limit, whereas ChatGPT strictly adhered to it and gave an answer exactly 50 words long.

On the other hand, Bard gave a few examples along with the definition which make the answer more relevant than ChatGPT’s.

However, the biggest difference between the two AI’s, at least as of the date this post was written, is the data that they use. Bard AI is based on the latest and updated knowledge, whereas the database that ChatGPT uses is only till September 2021. Thus, it cannot answer successfully and correctly any question that relates to any information beyond the abovementioned date.

Conclusion:

Bard AI represents a remarkable stride in the world of AI-powered language models. It showcases Google's commitment to advancing the field of artificial intelligence and revolutionizing the way we interact with machines. From enhancing conversational AI to unleashing creativity, Bard AI offers a plethora of possibilities across various sectors. However, as with any technological advancement, ethical considerations remain crucial to ensure responsible and beneficial use.

As we move forward, the future of Bard AI remains bright, with further improvements and refinements sure to come. Embracing this transformative technology with vigilance and a sense of responsibility will undoubtedly shape a future where AI and human collaboration lead to unprecedented progress and ingenuity.

Despite claiming to be more advanced than ChatGPT, Bard AI hasn’t had the same kind of success the former has enjoyed. The primary reason for that was the first mover advantage that ChatGPT had. However, Google has immense financial AND human resources that it can pool into both development and marketing of Bard to make it more successful than ChatGPT. It remains to be seen how popular Bard will become, and how ChatGPT will play out. Will Google try to acquire ChatGPT? Will Bard ever have its viral moment that ChatGPT just had? AI has opened a plethora of possibilities and what happens remains to be seen.
